Dystopia Defintion

Based on the media I have consumed throughout my lifetime. The definition of a dystopia is a society that leaves an overwhelming majority of its citizens in a constant state of unhappiness. This is due to the fact that this definition encompasses the many factors that define a dystopia according to Webster dictionary. When citizens as a whole population are unhappy it can show that the society, they inhabit are not meeting their needs. This could be due to multiple reasons such as material scarcity. As resources are tightly controlled and distributed. This causes starvation within its citizens which makes them act in violent manner in an attempt to survive. Because of the lack of resources citizens would also feel a societal inequality. Basic necessities become luxuries, and the socioeconomic disparities will deepen the gap between the ruling class, the upper class and the oppressed masses, which will cause extreme levels of animosity. Also, there will be an extreme loss of the citizens personal liberties. This would cause a sense of hopelessness that would leave it citizens depressed and vulnerable. Every interaction and decision would be thought of without a sense of personality or individuality. Also, the constant surveillance and monitoring make the people of dystopian society fear its government or ruler. This would happen more and more when citizens become aware of being under the watchful eyes in their lives. This will make people feel overwhelmed and anxious to make any mistake. Lastly, the destruction of one’s ability to speak out would make people feel uncomfortable at best and utterly unsafe at worst and this would stifle any chance of free expression. This would cause things like media, art and even basic conversations to change to not offend the government they serve. Because conversations would become a fearful thing to have a ruin a human’s ability to interact with another. Humans need to interact with each other and form genuine connects to be happy and this just doesn’t happen in a dystopian society due to its nature. In conclusion, the dystopian society model inflicts incurable psychological wounds on its citizens. The constant battle against an oppressive governmental system, coupled with the absence of genuine human connection, the lack of resources, and the deprivation of fundamental rights, creates a breeding ground for unhappiness.
