Based on what I’ve learned and experienced this semester, dystopia means a world where society and individuals are effected by technology and strange rules given by the government.
According to the “Five Faces of Oppression” by Iris Young, a dystopia society clearly emphasizes exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. A dystopia strongly encourages violence and displays powerlessness by preventing the poor from
gaining control of their lives and keeping them in fear. According to the “Civilization & Its Discontents” by Sigmund Freud, a bad place such as a dystopia has a government that represses human nature. The government has control over social media, television and more. This is known as censorship. I believe dystopias emphasize how human nature can be strongly effected by the government.
