We Need To Talk About “Dystopia”

The term “dystopia” brings about various images in one’s mind of the negative variety. The visualizations include terror, a placid or restricted society and some forms of oppression. Despite the similarities in connotations of the term, there still is difficulty in creating a similar and equal definition. In class this past week, we worked to edit the Merriam-Webster definition to be one the majority could agree on. Our draft at the end of class was  “An imaginary or real place whose people may lead a restricted and oppressive existence under some form of authority”. I believe this edit was near to complete but the section “restricted and oppressive” seems excessively redundant to be followed with “some form of authority”. I would prefer the edit to only include restricted. Another aspect of the definition that brings questioning is including “imaginary or real” to describe a place rather than being a place on its own.
