Dystopia Defined

After a full semester of learning and engaging in assignments that were surrounded on the topic of dystopia and dystopian societies, my definition of dystopia is, “An unfavorable and undesired state of society by a majority of a population.”

I say this because dystopia is actually defined as, “A state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic.” Each and everyone of us on this Earth has our own opinions, views on life, and beliefs. So therefore, we all have different viewpoints of what a dystopian society is. Yes, some we can agree on and some we do not. For example, the Black Lives Matter movement. After a countless number of black men and women being murder by the police, the black community and others that supported the movement and decided to protest on this matter. Now as a non-black person during this time, people either considered this event a dystopian society by empathy or they simply did not because they believe that the issue did not affect them.

And that’s what I mean by a majority of a population. Even though you may not be directly affected or affected at all by any for dystopia, it does not take away the fact that a dystopian society is still in place. Even though this was not included in the assignment instructions, as Xavierites in each of our prospective careers, it is our job to uphold our schools mission by identifying and help decrease any form of dystopia. Even if it does affect us.
