Proficiency Check #2

Critically analyze contemporary events.

I believe that my reception of contemporary events has somewhat stayed the same. I’m still engaged with current events in the world, not just in the U.S. I think that the recent pandemic outbreak has a lot to do with that, as I’m constantly receiving more and more news from all around. I always look for the political implications in everything, which has only increased since taking this course. Now, I’m not solely interested in race relations; while that is still a prominent topic that comes to my mind, I can appreciate the different angles that any event takes, and all the different things that are affected by one event.

Articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in written and oral forms to persons inside and outside of an organization.

I do feel that I have gained a greater sense of competence in this regard. Before, I was confident in my written skills and I felt that my speaking presentation of certain topics was good, but there’s always room for improvement. Now that we’ve gone through our podcast,  watched the movie together and shared ideas, and come up with a cohesive script to do our project, I definitely felt that I was getting better at presenting my ideas in an oral format. I think the group discussion aspect of the podcast project was incredibly beneficial to my overall ability to speak in groups and articulate my points clearly.

Develop greater proficiency as a self-regulated learner.

I think this is a topic that we can all say we’ve had to improve in, whether we were already good at it or not. With the pandemic, and the move from in-person to remote, online learning, I’ve definitely seen a change in how I prepare for class and how I take charge of my own education. I’ve had to look more closely at material and stick to a schedule just to feel that I was at the same level as before. I’ve found that with the extra time I have on hand now, I can actually get all of my work done, and I think that I’ll be able to go into my last semester of undergrad with a much more level-head, regardless of my work schedule. Prioritizing my education has definitely been something that I see an improvement and more value in, which ultimately has translated into me taking a more active role in my learning of the subjects, and not just finishing the work for points.
