I feel that my ability to critically analyze fictional films and texts through writing is pretty well developed. However, sometimes when I have to speak in a large setting I second guess my thoughts or opinions and mince my words, therefore muddling my overall point and its effectiveness. I prefer writing to speaking; I feel more at ease in smaller groups having a discussion whether it’s through writing or dialogue because I feel like I can contribute something purposeful to the conversation rather than reiterating what another person has said in a larger group.
I also really enjoy the fact that we analyze and connect our learning to events that are happening currently, but sometimes I struggle to see how the two correlate. I think that a lot of the literature that we read as well as the movies we will watch paint an accurate picture of our modern world and the steps we could inadvertently be taking to place us in a dystopian box. Life imitates art (as the saying goes, and sometimes vice versa) so I feel like this class is one in which it can be beneficial to see the way real life can sometimes inspire the outrageous plots of literature and films.
In this class, a lot of our assignments are self-motivated and we have to push ourselves to make sure we complete the readings as well as understand them so that we can contribute meaningful information to our group discussion. While this is one of my favorite aspects of this class I find it difficult to reach the underlying meaning in some of the text that we read and just take it at face value. Due to this, I sometimes come away from the text confused by its content and feel like my contribution will not be relevant to the group. The times I feel most comfortable with the text is when I read it thoroughly a few times and consult other secondary texts to help clarify some ideas that I don’t immediately grasp. Since we never really stop learning, I feel like this class aids us in being motivated to keep reading, questioning and discussing all forms of media.
