My newfound definition of a dystopia is a place or society where people do not thrive due to malevolent causes or forces by other beings, institutions, laws, etc. I feel that this is a better definition taken from all that I have learned through this course. Included in that is Iris Young’s “Five Faces of Oppression” where Young discusses the different things in life such as exploitation, violence, marginalization, and more which depicts what we know as dystopias. This was very eye-opening to the world that we live in today because I do think this is considered a dystopia. Another source that I have taken knowledge from is George Orwell’s “1984” where there was the idea of the thought police. It portrays our lives today as the idea of big brother watching us from all the different computer devices we utilize. These are just a couple of examples of what helped me shape my definition of a dystopia.
