At the beginning of the semester, my definition of dystopia was an imagined world that is full of fear, thrill and making the impossible seem real. I still believe this but I want to add a few more details. Dystopia is a place that people fear to live, it is oppressed and people don’t feel safe because they no longer. have the liberties they used to.
I have learned more that there are many limits to what people are allowed to do. The leaders of the societies trying to things perfect only makes the world they live in worse. There is so much censorship of what people can or cant do and the level of propaganda to get people to believe is insane. Young’s “Five Faces of Oppression” of exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, I have learned more that there are many limits to what people are allowed to do. Through powerlessness, exploitation, violence, cultural imperialism, and marginalization. These are all clearly seen in most dystopian societies. If not all five then definitely 3 of them. Same with Orwells 1984. Winston was being watched by “big brother” at all times. Even in his own home there was no privacy.
