What is a dystopia?

Dystopias can be defined as societies in which people aren’t able to live freely and are restricted in many ways. Essentially dystopias can be categorized as societies that are post-apocalyptic or even totalitarian, where one entity is in total control of everything people are allowed to do. The reason I define dystopia as such is due to my experiences with dystopias, primarily observed in fictional portrayals.

According to Merriam-Webster.com, the definition of DYSTOPIA is “an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives”. Based on your experiences with books, films, and reality, write a 1-sentence definition of DYSTOPIA. Then offer a 1- or 2-paragraph justification for that definition.

an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic.

A dystopia is a speculated community or society that is undesirable or frightening

Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted/ censored. A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society. Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance. Citizens have a fear of the outside world.

1 : an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives There’s almost a flavor of science fiction to the scenes Chilson describes, as though he were giving us a glimpse into a 21st-century dystopia of mad egoism and hurtling hulks of metal.
