Dystopias: What is it, really?

In class on Thursday, we developed the following definition of Dystopia: “An imaginary or real place whose people may lead a restricted and oppressive existence under some form of authority”. This is very true however I do believe that if we used the term wretched to describe the people, it would provide the definition with another layer that is not present. I also believe that the words “An imaginary or real” can be removed because it is sort of redundant, a place can only be real or imagined. So my suggested definition would be the following: “A place whose wretched people may lead a restricted and oppressive existence under some form of authority”.
