I define a dystopia as a hypothetical universe in which moral or dictatorial authority maintains oppressive societal control to promote a flawless society.
To recognize a dystopia, one must simply look upon the reality that is our current world. We have somehow tricked ourselves into thinking that a dystopia is only seen when the world is doused in flames, but that is not the case. I believe that humans in and of themselves represent dystopias. We show it through our actions that we ironically claim are intended to “better” the world. The fact of the matter, is that the presence of conquerors bring about the conquered, war is started by the desire to keep peace, and lies are born in order to shield the truth. The sooner we realize this and change our way of living, the quicker we can progress from our current dystopian state.
Young’s five faces of oppression supports this level of thinking as it showcases the five ways in which oppression shows up in our world. This just goes to show that oppression which is a negative thing, runs amok due to the will of humans. It is both inevitable and sad. The Martin Luther King Jr. discussion activity, also shows an example of this. Dr King’s hope for a better world was made in strife, as the utopia he sought has not yet arrived and very well may never. Human are dualistic in nature. They bring chaos and hope for balance. This is the tru dystopia.
