A dystopia is an imaginary society where its citizens are being oppressed by the government because they think they are doing what’s best for them to survive. In the book 1984, Big Brother has rules set for the society that everyone must follow even though they are very absurd and wrong like the thought police. In Iris Young’s Five Faces of Oppression, she talks about exploitation and violence which are common is dystopias. Overall, I think my definition hasn’t really changed since the beginning of the semester but I do have a better understanding of it. I believe that a dystopian society is a society where its people undergo great trauma, suffering and injustice because of their leaders believing they are doing it for the right purpose. They believe sacrificing the physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing of their people will help keep balance throughout the community even though it is hurting them.
