The Purge is a cinematic dystopian masterpiece that provides insight into what could happen if we gave into those dark urges to do the things we really wanted to do without legal repercussions. The Purge is a movie where people are free to do whatever they please for 12 hours and there are no medical help or police. This movie also shows the difference in classes and effecting they can be when only the rich can afford the resources to truly protect themselves from all the evil outside. It chronicles the hardships of having to survive during the 12 hours as a wealthy family and poorer counterparts. There are several reasons why it’s a dystopian cinematic film
The Purge is a dystopia because, for one, in what world is allowing level 4 crime to go rampant in the entire United States safe? Secure? Natural? I don’t believe there even is a world. This movie is no utopia and has already fit the definition of a dystopia just in the first 30 minutes of watching. To add more salt, there is no protection for those who need it the most, not the president or congress, but the ones the important people work for, the working class. Nobody is there to stop burglars, rapist, or racist. Nobody takes a case that happens during the 12 hours because anything that happens is purely legal. That doesn’t scream utopia for me to have to keep 5 guns in the house and my dad to buy bullets every Saturday does it? This movie shows us what we’re doing to ourselves if we keep allowing the ruling class to have their way everyday. I appreciate the fight back I see today in job trends. People putting their foot down and getting the recognition/compensation they deserve.
The Purge is a great movie to dissect for so many societal problems and combining those problems into a dystopia. It’s part of the reason why there are 5 movies in the franchise, that and the dramatic storyline/kills of course. It conveys so many different interpretations and can independently support a lot of them. Overall I enjoyed the film and highly recommend it to those that are over 13!
