According to Merriam-Webster.com, the definition of DYSTOPIA is “an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives”. Based on your experiences with books, films, and reality, write a 1-sentence definition of DYSTOPIA. Then offer a 1- or 2-paragraph justification for that definition.
My definition, Dystopia: a reality for person(s) where there is constant unhappiness, struggle, and suffering.
This definition is based on recent movies, and real life experiences where in life it only gets harder. Now that’s not to say that everybody’s life is hard which is where “person(s)” comes in because of course everyone has their own opinion on what there life is like. The saying “Nobody said it would be easy” is so relevant especially in today’s climate with this pandemic. Honestly I feel like the pandemic is the biggest argument for my definition because it has caused serious unhappiness/depression, people lost their jobs which resulted in struggling, and all of that leads to suffering in the end. This is still some people’s reality today and while for a moment we experienced a utopia, I feel like we can agree that this is no longer that but more along the lines of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” on repeat.
