5 Faces of Oppression

This article ” Five Faces of Oppression” written by Iris Young was written and publish in 1990. Young in her article explains that all forms of oppression consist of exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. The 90s was a time where homophobia, sexism, ageism and racism were seen quite frequently and was a lot more public than it is in our current society. Young saw each of the issues as different forms of oppression due to the marginalized groups involved in these issues being discriminated against and the quality of their lives being limited.

Being an African American man in America Young’s article is very relevant to me. In the year of 2020 society has improved immensely however the battle between the oppressors and the oppressed is still prominent in our current society today. Young states that the battle of oppression may never be overcome due to the oppressed contributing to their own oppression. This article hasn’t really altered my thinking too much it more so validated certain thoughts. Ive always had the question about why oppression is still prominent in society today. Oppression is commonly reinforced by the actions of the oppressors as well as the oppressed. However I do not think its easy to fight against this system of oppression. Oppression is a system that has been implemented hundredths of years American society so to be able to completely defeat oppression it would probably take consistent action for just as long if not longer.
